The NICOLE Foundation becomes a public charity

As the NICOLE Foundation enters its third year, we are pleased to share an important milestone: the Foundation has officially been granted public charity status.

Since its inception, the Foundation has operated as a non-profit organisation, committed to addressing environmental pollution where it continues to harm ecosystems and communities. Becoming a public charity represents a deepening of that commitment, strengthening the governance, transparency and partnerships required to deliver impact at scale.

Environmental contamination remains one of the most persistent and complex global challenges. In many cases, the polluter pays principle – a cornerstone of environmental regulation – can no longer be enforced. Companies may have dissolved, legal frameworks may be limited, or the resources required for remediation may not exist.

These are a growing global reality.

The NICOLE Foundation was established to address these challenges, bringing together environmental expertise, funding and local partnerships to deliver solutions where existing mechanisms cannot.

We work in contexts where environmental problems persist because responsibility is unclear, capacity is limited, or the challenges are too complex or high-risk for traditional approaches. This includes regions affected by conflict, where environmental damage compounds humanitarian and public health risks and where coordinated, science-based responses are urgently needed.

Becoming a public charity strengthens our ability to operate in these environments.

It enables the Foundation to collaborate more effectively with philanthropic organisations, corporate ESG programmes, multilateral institutions and civil society partners who are seeking credible, accountable mechanisms to translate environmental commitments into measurable impact.

For funders and strategic partners, public charity status provides greater confidence in governance, transparency and the effective deployment of resources, ensuring that funding can reach projects that might otherwise remain unaddressed.

For environmental experts, it strengthens the platform through which scientific knowledge can be translated into real-world action, addressing pollution challenges that too often remain unresolved despite available expertise.

For communities and local organisations, it supports a model based on partnership, combining international expertise with local knowledge to deliver practical, durable environmental solutions.

This milestone also marks a step forward in the Foundation’s longer-term ambition.

Our goal is to become the global partner of choice for addressing environmental crises where others cannot – mobilising expertise, funding and collaboration to respond to complex environmental challenges wherever they arise.

Since its launch, the Foundation has already begun building this model in practice, working with partners across a range of contexts, including:

  • UNEA Resolution 6/12: Proof of Concept of Technical Guidance for Post-Conflict Environmental Recovery

  • Multiple programmes in Ukraine, including: asbestos management in debris; protection of first responders from hazardous chemicals; assessment of war-related damage to chemical and petroleum sites; and development of environmental standards for humanitarian demining.

  • Technical assistance for oil spill assessment and response planning in Northeast Syria

These experiences reinforce both the scale of the challenge and the need for new, collaborative approaches.

Environmental pollution is not only an environmental issue – it is a public health issue, a development challenge and, increasingly, a factor in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Addressing it requires coordination across disciplines, sectors and geographies.

The NICOLE Foundation believes that through trusted partnerships, bringing together expertise, resources and local leadership, it is possible to restore ecosystems, protect human health and contribute to more resilient communities.
