Gaza Environmental Risk Screening and Roadmap
The NICOLE Foundation supported UNEP to map and prioritise environmental risks in Gaza, supporting safer recovery and reconstruction.

The NICOLE Foundation supported the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in partnership with ERM International Group Limited and Barbara Maco, to help identify and prioritise environmental risks associated with conflict-related damage in Gaza.
Using available assessment data and other information sources, the project combined geospatial analysis, structured environmental risk assessment and dashboard-based decision-support tools to assess the likelihood and severity of priority risks. The approach also considered how environmental impacts may change over time across different recovery and reconstruction scenarios.
The work brought together more than 80 datasets, over 80 geospatial GIS layers, and more than 800 potential Source-Pathway-Receptor linkages. Results from the risk analysis and stakeholder engagement informed an initial environmental recovery roadmap, setting out short-, medium- and long-term actions to support governance, capacity building, sampling and analysis, and the assessment, mitigation and remediation of priority environmental risks.
